Winner of the Audience Award at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, Miami International Film Festival, and San Diego Latino Film Festival, The Last Suit (El último traje) written and directed by Pablo Solarz, will open theatrically in Toronto, August 17, at Cineplex Empress Walk Cinema, and across Quebec August 24.
The Last Suit screened recently in Ontario at the Windsor Jewish Film festival, as well at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival where it won that festival’s first 2018 Air Transat ‘The Chosen Film’ People’s Choice Award.
Produced by Gerardo Herrero, The Last Suit is a touching tale inspired by Solarz’s own grandfather and his life in Poland during the holocaust. While his past in Poland was a taboo topic for discussion at home, Solarz knew his grandfather’s life was somehow marked by what happened in Poland.
His curiosity led him to a serendipitous encounter with a man whose own father at 90 went back to Hungary to find a Catholic friend who hid him from the Nazis. Through the telling of this life-changing journey, Solarz filled in the voices, music, and images, that he believes were silenced while growing up.
The film itself sees Abraham Bursztein, an 88-year old Jewish tailor who leaves Buenos Aires for Poland, where he will try to find the man who saved him from a certain death after surviving Auschwitz.
Bursztein escapes his family who sold his house and wanted to put him in a nursing home. Against all odds and after more than seven decades with no news from his friend, Bursztein will attempt to find his old friend and fulfil his promise of returning one day to tell him all about the life he had thanks to his courage.
