“[A] cinematic treasure chest. The biggest, wildest, most motley and ambitious achievement of the year…” – The Nation
“A masterpiece… Meets the mess of life on its own clear and true terms.” – The Village Voice
“Uproarious and scathing, compassionate and urgent…” – The New Yorker
Video Services Corp. (VSC) brings one of the year’s most ambitious and unique cinematic experiences to Canada, beginning its theatrical rollout in Montreal on December 18, followed by Vancouver January 1, and Toronto January 8.
A major hit at this year’s Cannes and TIFF, Arabian Nights, directed by Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes (Tabu), adopts the structure of “Arabian Nights” as he tackles the European economic crisis in a thrillingly imaginative three-part epic.
With legendary storyteller queen Scheherazade (Crista Alfaiate) at the narrative helm, Gomes constructs elaborate stories infused with folklore to paint a lurid, surreal portrait of a contemporary Portugal in crisis. Weaving potent satire with magical realism, characters like a talking rooster, exploding whale, teleporting murderers, ghosts, and virginal mermaids, all work to beautifully detail the country’s descent into unemployment and austerity.
A 2012 Berlin Jury prize winner for his previous, critically acclaimed film Tabu, Gomes worked for a full year with researchers and journalists in order to capture true tales of hardship from across Portugal. Vol. 2 of the film, The Desolate One, has already earned Portugal’s official entry as Best Foreign Language film for the 2016 Academy Awards.
As vibrant as it is unpredictable, Arabian Nights is an awe-inspiring example of cinematic freedom and a must-see for all cinephiles.
Arabian Nights: Vol. 1, The Restless One, Vol. 2, The Desolate One and Vol. 3, The Enchanted One will be released over three consecutive weeks in Montreal.
While all three parts will be released in Vancouver beginning January 1, 2016 and in Toronto beginning January 8, 2016.
