Personal Stories From The Globe and Mail Adapted To Screen

Directors are Renuka Jeyapalan, Joyce Wong, and Jessie Gabe

 Carousel Pictures, in association with Sugar Shack Productions today announced the start of principal photography on six short films: First Person anthology, written and directed by Renuka Jeyapalan (Workin’ Moms), Joyce Wong (Wexford Plaza) and Jessie Gabe (Mr. D). The films are shooting in Toronto, Ontario until January 29, 2019.

Personal stories written by everyday Canadians has been published daily for 30 years in The Globe and Mail, earning a reputation of being Canada’s most popular literary series property. Initially known under the banner of Facts & Arguments, this written series was rebranded a year ago to, First Person.

With over 10,000 published articles, and with the help of researchers and the directors, six stories were selected to be filmed. Some of these popular bite-sized reads have been read over 100,000 times.

Ms. Jeyapalan is directing three films: CODE RED starring Alexandra Ordolis (Shadow Hunter, Dark Matter), Christopher Jacot (Slasher, Saving Hope) and Ian Ho (A Simple Favour); LIFE SUPPORT starring Raven Dauda (The Expanse, Star Trek: Discovery) and Jayne Eastwood (My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Haven); MY FATHER’S DIGNITY stars Kate Drummond (Wynonna Earp, Bitten).

Ms. Wong is directing MASCULINITY starring Chris Robinson (JFL42); and MY TORONTO HOME starring Louise Pitre (Flashpoint) and Joe Matheson (Certain Prey).

Ms. Gabe will direct MY WIFE’S AFFAIR IS KIND OF A FUNNY STORY starring Rayisa Kondracki (Wynonna Earp, Bitten) and Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll (Kim’s Convenience).

Each of the scripts were written by the directors.

“We are very proud to have assembled such an amazing group of young writers/directors who have brought their innovative vision to the films,” says Tyler Levine, President of Carousel Pictures.  “Not to mention our amazing cast who will translate these stories to the screen ranging from comedy to drama to musical!

Mr. Levine also serves as producer for the films along with Patrice Theroux of Sugar Shack Productions, and Renuka Jeyapalan as Executive Producer. Co-producers include  Katelyn Cursio, Bruno Lyra and Kevin Prozes.

The films will travel the film festival circuit and premiere in Toronto by summer 2019.  Global distribution on digital platforms will be handled by iThentic.

The producers are indebted to the important financial participation from the Independent Production Fund (IPF) and Canada’s Federal Tax Credit (CAVCO).
