TO BE HANDED OUT ANNUALLY
TO HONOUR THE CANADIAN DOCUMENTARY COMMUNITY

The DOC Institute, an initiative of the Documentary Organization of Canada, Toronto Chapter, announced today the creation of two annual awards, which recognize and celebrate directors, producers and other key visionaries working in the documentary field in Canada.

The DOC Star Award honours a person working in documentaries who excels in their professional position, and has also supported the wider industry, particularly in their work with emerging professionals.

“Documentary continues to be perhaps the most salient form for Canadians to share their stories with and about the world,” said documentary filmmaker and DOC Institute supporter Jennifer Baichwal. “The DOC Star Award acknowledges and celebrates an individual’s record of excellence and service in the documentary industry.”

The New Visions Award is given to an emerging professional filmmaker who demonstrates a keen artistic sensibility and potential to lead the next generation of doc-makers.

“The New Visions Award highlights the industry’s next generation of documentary talent—those early in their career who are following in Canada’s internationally renowned tradition, while continuing to push the genre’s creative boundaries,” said Adam Shamoon, Director of the DOC Institute.

The DOC Institute annual awards are community driven, with nominations that are submitted by members of the Documentary Organization of Canada, an association of over 600 filmmakers, craftspeople, and production companies from across the country. A jury of industry peers selects the recipients. Winners will be announced in December.

“In the rapidly changing documentary landscape, DOC Institute has filled a gap in supporting our national industry,” said Michael McMahon, Co-chair of DOC Toronto, which created the Institute. “These awards are reflective of the Institute’s commitment to our fellow Canadian doc-makers.”
