Firecracker Department is having a TIFF party!

And since the Firecracker Department is all about empowering and supporting women in the biz, FD has created the BLAZE AWARD, to honour a super spectacular woman in the industry. A woman who has taken action and broken the ceiling – and the sidewalk for that matter – and produced not only a place of creative action, but has been instrumental in paving the way for all the great fem-gems to follow. And who better to lead us off for our inaugural honour this year, than the incomparable, singer, actor, all-around-fun-gal, and Canadian be-bop-babe, Jann Arden.

“To me Jann Arden is the epitome of a Firecracker!,” says Naomi Snieckus. “She’s smart,  funny, fiercely driven but also kind, supportive and a contributor to her community. When we discussed who should be awarded the first ever BLAZE Award it was unanimous within the team. This past year Jann has put out a new album (These Are The Days), a book (Feeding My Mother), she does a fantastic podcast with Arlene Dickinson (The Business of Life) AND she’s working on her second season of the amazingly popular CTV show: Jann. All this while being a passionate community member and continuing to do everything with a wickedly dry sense of humour. If that’s not a Firecracker – I don’t know what is!  By shining a light on Jann’s accomplishments will no doubt inspire and empower other womxn to take creative action in their chosen art and generate more work about womxn’s stories, making our voices stronger. The world needs more Firecrackers!”

We will salute Jann at the Firecracker Department’s very first TIFF party on Sunday September 8, at 11:00am. We will let loose the noisemakers, as we celebrate not only Jann on her award, but all the awesome Firecrackers we are so proud to call our community!

Firecracker Department was started by Naomi Snieckus three years ago as an attempt to create more platforms for womxn’s stories and voices. Since then, and in less than a year, it has evolved from three people to 20, and has now grown into a community of core members in Toronto, Los Angeles and London (UK).

At this party we will be celebrating the hard work this group, and our community has achieved, including the phenomenal guests from the Firecracker Department podcast, such as Melanie Scrofano, Dani Kind, Jayne Eastwood, Grace Lynn Kung, Jean Yoon, just to name a few. As well, here’s our chance to get all dolled up in our Sunday Best, and connect with like-minded Firecrackers and encourage conversations that could lead to possible future collaborations.
