The sacrifice of self, the acclaim, the adoring crowds… classical pianist Marika Bournaki fits the role. But the title of Bobbi Joe Hart’s biographical documentary, I Am Not A Rock Star, speaks to the contradictions of Bournaki’s life.
Made over a span of eight years – following the classical phenom from 12-20 – Hart’s film amounts to a front row seat in the unfolding of a life and the forming of a personality. Shot in verité style in concert halls, hotels and airports around the world – and featuring stunning piano performances – the film turns Bournaki’s life into a visual narrative, revealing both the rewards and costs of a life dedicated to music.
I Am Not A Rock Star gives viewers a rare and candid look inside the world of classical music – a world that demands an elusive alchemy of sacrifice, talent and. As Marika seeks her place and identity in this world, we witness her conflict-ridden evolution from child to adult.
Presented as a world première at the 30th International Festival of Films on Art in Montréal, I Am Not A Rock Star has moved audiences at prestigious festivals worldwide, including the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, Guanajuato’s International Film Festival, Carmel Art & Film Festival, the Music Documentary Film Festival in Barcelona, DOCSDF in Mexico City and the Syracuse International Film Festival where it won best documentary award.
At a young age, Marika Bournaki has played to concert audiences across the globe, from Seoul, South Korea to St. Petersburgh, Russia.
A rapidly rising classical virtuoso whose playing exudes passion, this past summer, she was named Ambassador to Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal’s successful “A Cool Classical journey.” Bournaki has featured with Yannick Nézet Séguin’s Orchestre Métropolitain, at The National Arts Center Debut Recital Series, the Flanders Festival in Belgium and the Konzert Accordate Series in Aachen, Germany. She played a concert at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon for National Public Radio’s “From the Top” and performed a sold-out fundraising recital for The Glenn Gould Foundation at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall.
Filmmaker Bobbi Jo Hart directed her first documentary (A Calling to Care) in Pakistan in 1997. Her first feature-length documentary, She Got Game : Behind the Scenes of the Women’s Tennis Tour (2003), received awards at festivals worldwide before airing on numerous television networks.
