After its phenomenal award-winning festival run – beginning at the Directors Fortnight at Cannes and hitting the Toronto International Film Festival, AFI Fest and Rotterdam International Film Festival amongst many others – Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts will have a theatrical run at the TIFF Bell Lightbox starting June 29.
Currently sitting at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, director Mouly Surya (Fiksi, What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love) has solidified herself as a director to watch.
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts takes us to the deserted hills of an Indonesian island, where a young widow (Marsha Timothy) is raped and robbed of her cattle. In defending herself, Marlina kills several of the attacking gang members and decapitates their leader. She then sets out on a journey to find justice, empowerment, revenge and redemption. But the road is long, especially when the ghost of her headless victim begins to haunt her.
Inspired by a story passed on by fellow director, Garin Nugroho, Surya takes the traditional tale of revenge and turns it on it’s (decapitated) head.
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts takes you on a harrowing journey through the beautifully captured landscapes of Indonesia, while posing many questions from gender roles, in film and life, to the cycle of life. This fiercely original film challenges all preconceived notions about the historically masculine Western genre as Marlina transforms into the classic lone defender.
