Nearly a decade in the making, SPEECHLESS is Ric Esther Bienstock’s most personal and politically charged film to date.

Known for taking audiences inside some of the most urgent global crises of our time, from sex trafficking and slavery to Ebola outbreaks and organ trafficking in the landmark documentary Tales From the Organ Trade, Bienstock now turns her lens toward the escalating battles over speech, identity and power unfolding on university campuses.

Bienstock embedded herself inside some of the most divisive ideological conflicts reshaping higher education, following students, professors and administrators at institutions including Harvard, Cornell, Yale, Penn State, Evergreen State College, Stanford, the University of Sussex and New College of Florida. What emerges is a character-driven investigation into how debates over race, gender and social justice have evolved into high-stakes confrontations marked by viral outrage, professional fallout, and institutional upheaval. The film features voices across the ideological spectrum, from progressive organizers and critics of campus orthodoxy to conservative activists and institutional challengers, revealing contradictions, blind spots and unintended consequences on all sides.

Blending verité filmmaking with raw protest footage, insider testimony, archival material, viral social media and animation, SPEECHLESS traces how campus conflicts in North America and the U.K. spilled beyond the quad and into the broader political arena, culminating in a dramatic political intervention in higher education under Donald Trump. Cameras were rolling at New College of Florida as it became the first U.S. institution to dismantle its DEI office and eliminate its gender studies department, developments that signaled a broader national shift and are reverberating beyond U.S. borders. 

At its core, SPEECHLESS examines how battles over language on campus grew into a wider culture war, reshaping norms around free expression and fueling political backlash. The film poses an urgent question: what happens when a society loses the ability to tolerate disagreement – or when power begins deciding who gets to speak?

“My goal is to challenge viewers, regardless of where they fall politically, and to reflect on what’s at stake when we lose the ability to speak across differences,” says Bienstock. “My hope is that Speechless will remind us that disagreement is not a threat – it’s a feature of democracy. The danger comes when we stop speaking to each other altogether”.

In September 2024, Bienstock received a Silver Circle Emmy Award in New York, recognizing 25 years of significant and impactful contributions to the industry. She has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for raising awareness of global events and conflicts through film, and was awarded the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism for her exceptional body of work and contribution to the international profile of Canadian television journalism. Her many honours include an Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism, two Edward R. Murrow Awards, a Dupont-Columbia Award, a British Broadcast Award, multiple Canadian Screen Awards, Donald Brittain Awards, Geminis, a Genie, a Royal Television Society Award, a BAFTA nomination and two Amnesty International Awards.
