During WW II, the U.S.’s Office of Strategic Services (OSS) trained thousands of men and launched hundreds of covert missions. Now, the team behind Tiger Spirit and The Real M*A*S*H, unveils a new HISTORY documentary about the OSS’s mission ‘Operation Greenup’ and the two young American Jews who parachuted into the Austrian Alps to strike back at Nazi Germany.
Meet The Real Inglorious Bastards.
Airing on November 8 at 9pm ET on HISTORY, The Real Inglorious Bastards tells the story of Hans Wijnberg, Fred Mayer and Fanz Weber: the heroes behind Operation Greenup.
Young refugees Hans Wijnberg and Fred Mayer (from Holland and Germany respectively) both enlisted in the U.S. army and were recruited by the OSS. At a Washington DC country-club-turned-boot camp, they become fast friends while learning guerilla warfare. With help on the ground from an Austrian “inside man,” a Wehrmacht deserter named Franz Weber, the two brothers-in-arms staged Operation Greenup in the Austrian alpine state of Tyrol.
The Real Inglorious Bastards dramatizes the intrepid trio’s night jump into the Austrian Alps and their success in severely damaging rail and road communications between the Italian front and Germany. Using vivid first-person accounts, re-enactments, CGI, archival material and historian commentary, the film recounts how this group monitored the Brenner Pass, the main supply route from Nazi Germany into Italy, and investigated rumours of a Nazi Alpine stronghold meant to be the site of Hitler’s last stand.
On October 27 of this year, Mayer, who was captured while reconnoitring a Messerschmitt factory and bluffed his way out of captivity by offering “immunity” at war’s end to the leader of Tyrol, will receive a citation at an OSS Society gala at the Washington, D.C Ritz Carlton. The event, in honour of Robert M. Gates, ex-head of the CIA (the OSS’s successor), will include a screening of a clip from The Real Inglorious Bastards and a history-making guest-list, including President George H.W. Bush, James R. Schlesinger and H. Ross Perot.
“I did my job, but it was my war,” Mayer says. “I hated the Nazis and I loved America. It was as simple as that. It was a good feeling that we won. And the fact that Hans was where I could find him. And Franz was where I could find him, it was a good feeling. Happy ending.”
