LIMELIGHT is set to party on screens like it’s 1989 in a coke-and-dagger documentary of the rise and fall of New York club king Peter Gatien from acclaimed Cocaine Cowboys director Billy Corben.

Gatien, the rakish eye patch-sporting entrepreneur, rose from working as a denim merchant in his native Cornwall, Ontario, through stints in Atlanta and Miami in the disco seventies before he hit Manhattan in the early 80s, taking over a deconsecrated church on Sixth Avenue and turning it into the legendary Limelight disco. From his turntable of power there, Gatien also operated The Palladium, Tunnel and Club USA to be the undisputed heavyweight champ of New York nightlife.

The story Corben tells, with full disclosure from Gatien, is that of a witch hunt by the Rudolph Giuliani administration to rid New York of Gatien, who was eventually deported back to Canada for charges which, to this day, struck the filmmakers as tenuous. Yet there is no shortage of sleaze on both sides of a story that holds true to the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle of the early 90s. There’s even a murder.

Limelight, a hit at this year’s Hot Docs festival, was acquired by VSC from Magnolia Pictures at its Tribeca Film Festival debut. Limelight opens in Canada on September 23, day and date with the U.S. release.

Corben and his producing partner Alfred Spellman partnered on the pot documentary Square Grouper and the globally popular Cocaine Cowboys series, as well as ESPN’s The U.  Along with Corben and Spellman is producer Jen Gatien (Peter’s daughter) who was behind VSC’s Holy Rollers and the upcoming Jack and Diane.

“Peter Gatien’s story has unique appeal in Canada and we’re thrilled to be bringing the film to audiences in this country,” says VSC President Jonathan Gross. “Everyone will have a chance to become a 90s club kid again or for the first time. Hey, even I partied at Limelight!”

“When Jen Gatien approached us with the idea of making the doc, we jumped at it because we recognized a similar dynamic to Cocaine Cowboys. Limelight is another rise and fall tale set against the transformation of a city, in this case New York,” says rakontur’s Alfred Spellman.
