PRESS RELEASE
Canadiana, the acclaimed independent Canadian history web series, is set to captivate audiences once again with its current episode The Great Whale Robbery of Labrador. This compelling installment delves into the obscure yet intriguing true crime story of a Basque whaler who stole a whale from a rival, sparking a legal battle that spanned generations.
Five hundred years ago, Basque whalers ventured to Labrador in search of their colossal prey, establishing a thriving port in Red Bay. Despite centuries of obscurity, the remarkable history of Basque whaling in 16th Century Labrador was unearthed by Canadian historian Dr. Selma Barkham in the 1970s. Her groundbreaking research, conducted amidst challenging circumstances as a widowed mother of four, revealed long-forgotten documents and led to the designation of Red Bay Labrador as a National Historic Site.
Ashley Brook, Kyle Cucco and Adam Bunch, the visionaries behind Canadiana, masterfully bring this forgotten tale to life through meticulous research and innovative storytelling techniques.
Brook collaborated with her father, Mark Brook – a miniature hobbyist – who recreated the saga with stunning miniature sets, ensuring a unique and immersive viewing experience.
The Great Whale Robbery of Labrador promises to be a standout episode in Canadiana’s illustrious history, building on the series’ recent successes. With over 3.4 million views on YouTube and a viral hit with the previous episode, How The American Civil War Made Canada, Canadiana continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
Supported by financial backing from The Bell Fund, Canada History Fund, Canada Media Fund, and Parks Canada, Canadiana’s third season has been its most successful yet. And the series’ achievements have not gone unnoticed, earning yet another nomination by the Canadian Screen Award 2024, this time for Best Picture Editing – David Schmidt, Kyle Cucco, Ashley Brook – for Web Program or Series.
