PRESS RELEASE
LUNATIC: THE LUNA VACHON STORY a film by Kate Kroll, dives deep into the tumultuous life of wrestling legend Luna Vachon, revealing the woman behind the iconic mohawk and ferocious persona. The film explores the triumphs and tragedies of a groundbreaking athlete who defied expectations and paved the way for women in professional wrestling.
LUNATIC chronicles the journey of Trudy Vachon, born into a wrestling dynasty, as she transformed into Luna “The Lunatic” Vachon, a formidable force in the WWF during the “Attitude Era” in the late 1990s early 2000s. Known for her intimidating presence and unparalleled skill, Luna shattered stereotypes, inspiring a generation of women to embrace their strength and challenge the status quo.
Beyond the wrestling ring, however, Luna battled personal demons, including the guilt of balancing motherhood with her career, a bipolar diagnosis, abuse, and addiction. The film poignantly portrays the duality of Luna’s life, revealing the sensitive woman beneath the hardened exterior.
“This is not just a wrestling story; it’s a human story,” says writer, producer, and director Kate Kroll. “We wanted to explore the complexities of Luna’s life, her incredible impact on the industry, and the devastating struggles she faced. In a time when women were often relegated to stereotypical roles, Luna demanded respect and carved her own path.”
LUNATIC sheds light on the challenges faced by women wrestlers during a period marked by hyper-sexualization and limited opportunities. The film highlights Luna’s pivotal role in challenging these norms and advocating for women’s equality in the sport.
Directed, written, and produced by award-winning filmmaker and pro-wrestler Kate Kroll, also known as “Calamity Kate,” LUNATIC combines archival footage, compelling interviews, and verité storytelling to provide an intimate and unflinching look at Luna Vachon’s life and legacy. Kroll, who herself steps into the ring when she’s not producing films, brings a unique perspective and deep understanding of the wrestling world to this project. The film also delves into the broader issues of mental health and addiction within the entertainment and sports industries, raising critical questions about the cost of pursuing one’s dreams.
