PRESS RELEASE
In 1973, Dr. Mutulu Shakur, along with members of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords, combined holistic health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in the US called the Lincoln Detox. This form of radical drug treatment was a revolutionary act toward the government programs that transfixed the lives of black and brown communities throughout the South Bronx.
Dope is Death utilizes an abundant archive while giving insight into how the acupuncture clinic rose to become both a space of healing and resistance. And how the clinic ultimately came under attack by the FBI and CIA. Dr. Mutulu Shakur’s legacy is cemented within this profound story of community healing and activism.
Dope is Death had its Canadian premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2020, and is back for this special one-night screening that includes filmmaker Mia Donovan and panel of guests from the acupuncture community, trained in the NADA protocol, developed by Dr. Mutulu Shakur and the acupuncture collective from the original Lincoln Detox during the 1970s.
Dope is Death is written, directed and edited by Mia Donovan, and is produced by EyeSteelFilm. Executive Producers are Mila Aung-Thwin, and Daniel Cross, Producer is Bob Moore, Associate Producer is Katie McKay.
