PRESS RELEASE
The much-anticipated British period thriller The Critic is set for a wide release across Canada through Cineplex and indie cinemas, with a simultaneous day-and-date launch in the US and the UK on September 13, 2024.
Directed by Anand Tucker and written by Patrick Marber, the film is based on the 2015 novel Curtain Call by Anthony Quinn.
The Critic first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7, 2023, where it received considerable attention.
Set in the atmospheric world of 1934 London, The Critic plunges viewers into a dark and suspenseful narrative. The story centers around Nina Land, an actress who becomes entangled in a perilous situation involving the influential theatre critic Jimmy Erskine and his paper’s editor, David Brooke. As the tension between the characters escalates, secrets unravel, leading to a dramatic climax that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
The film boasts a stellar cast, featuring legendary actor Ian McKellen as the sharp-tongued critic Jimmy Erskine, Gemma Arterton as the beleaguered actress Nina Land, Mark Strong as the formidable editor David Brooke, and Lesley Manville as Annabel Land. They are joined by Romola Garai as Cora Wyley, Ben Barnes as Stephen Wyley, Alfred Enoch as Tom Tunner, Nikesh Patel as Ferdy Harwood, Jay Simpson as Slyfield.
The Critic is a masterful blend of suspense, drama, and period detail, capturing the complex dynamics of power and ambition within the theatre world of 1930s London.
